Entertaining Materials Science in the Domain of Mens Rings.jpg

Jewelry has always been a mirror of its owner's individuality. Since men don’t normally sport many pieces of jewelry, rings remain their favorite bling. Thanks to its appealing appearance, a carefully selected ring helps convey a certain message or make a bold statement.

Throughout the history of mankind, mens biker rings have undergone several semantic transformations. They used to be authentication tools (to seal and sign letters), family heirloom, and even a weapon. Today, however, they are an eye-catching accent, a certain toy for the majority of grown-up boys. Along with that, some men put special meaning into their rings or have them as keepsakes. Be that as it may, guys can choose among an insanely wide variety of rings. The design is a purely personal matter – an item that someone adores may shock and repel others. That’s why we won’t focus on that. Instead, let’s talk about rings from a material perspective.

Precious Metals

While yellow gold has been widespread in jewelry-making throughout the years, today the focus is shifted toward white gold.

Some people think that the term white gold implies a shiny white metal. In reality, it describes various gold alloys that have a whitish hue. White gold can be of gray, dark brown or even pale pink colors depending on the alloy’s ‘ingredients. The radiant white color that we see in white gold products is, in fact, a rhodium coating. Rhodium is a precious metal that belongs to the platinum group of metals. Rhodium plating gives a crisp white color to jewelry of any precious metal. Although, manufacturers tend to ‘hide’ metals of whitish hues underneath because if plating starts wearing down, there won’t be any patches of yellow or something.

If you incline to non-plated gold bands, you might still want to experiment with designs. A nice way to do so is to pick a so-called two-tone ring. First introduced by Cartier, it combines two or three metals of various shades. Normally, those are yellow and white gold or yellow gold and platinum. If you want to take one step further, there are also three-tone models made of yellow, white, and pink gold.

The popularity of platinum jewelry is gaining momentum. This metal boasts a fairly hefty price tag. Therefore, it is an indicator of luxury and prestige. Platinum is so desirable due to its rareness. On top of that, it is tarnish- and oxidation-resistant, hypoallergenic, and simply beautiful. Platinum is ideally compatible with precious gems. Yellow, pink, and cognac diamonds, sapphires, amethysts or emeralds are great when it comes to enhancing the metal’s white radiance.

If you can’t afford platinum but you like its appearance, you can go with something old as hills but still lovable and attractive – silver. Meticulously polished silver has an appearance similar to platinum but its price is several times cheaper. Another benefit of silver is that it can easily take on various finishes ranging from blackening to hammering. Therefore, you can get a ring with an artistic quality and it won’t require you to break the bank.

Non-Precious Metals

Not so long ago, we witnessed a new trend of tungsten carbide jewelry. This black metal with a muted satin sheen draws looks from far and wide. It looks astonishing on its own. However, jewelry manufacturers love adorning it with auxiliary metals to create spellbinding contrast. Silver, steel, and other white metals are ideal for this role. The major benefit of tungsten rings, besides slick appearance, is incredible toughness and durability. That said, you need to be careful when it comes to sizes because it is problematic to adjust jewelry made of tungsten.

Out of the blue, silicone or rubber rings hit the market… and won so many hearts of truehearted fashionistas. In one of the latest Emporio Armani collections, rubber is combined with steel and precious stones. You will definitely make heads turn with this piece of jewelry but whether it can last a lifetime is an interesting question.

Along with tungsten, titanium also made it to the category of super durable metals. Titanium rings are pros in retaining their shape and preserving luster. They do it so well that many jewelers give a lifetime guarantee on these products. It is a popular trend to blend titanium with yellow and white gold, as well as diamonds to give a ring some eye-catching accents.

Titanium rings often carry futuristic or high-tech designs. They are massive, deliberately rugged, and frequently feature intriguing inlays. One of the latest trends made jewelry manufacturers experiment with materials and the result of this work was astonishing. If you want to surprise your friends, you can opt for a titanium ring with an insert of dinosaur bone, deer horn, or even a meteorite.
